If you ask people about their experiences and observations of things that happen during the search for potential spouse, you will hear all sorts of funny, ironic & ugly stories. In Pakistan especially in urban areas, the most popular factor in a potential bride is her looks & appearance. Appearance is factor in love marriage too but the way it is considered in arrange marriage makes the potential bride more an inanimate object.

I have a story to tell as described by a friend of mine.

We were looking for the future husband for my cousin; one day my cousin’s mother received a call from a woman, describing herself as the mother of the son for whom she is looking a bride. The guy’s mother had never met their family… During conversation on the phone, after some formal talk, the guy’s mother asked:

Guy’s Mother: Is your daughter beautiful?
(..Obviously what would a mother would say, a mother is supposed to say that her child is beautiful.)

Girl’s Mother replies: You should visit us and see her by yourself.

Guy’s Mother: Its better you tell, so our time wouldn’t be wasted…

It’s so sorry to hear about how people would say such things with brute shameless and coldness.

It also reminds me of a true story of a mother of 3 sons and a daughter. The sons were good looking & handsome whereas the daughter was dark skin & a little plumpy. When looking for potential brides for her sons, she only demanded beautiful and white skinned girls. But when her own daughter’s time came she was ashamed by facing the reality; As many family’s visited for her daughter but simply excused because of her looks.

You may think that she may have learned her lesson and she would be ashamed of her behavior but instead she was ashamed of her daughter being ugly. But hey it’s Pakistan! People rarely get moral lessons from their experiences.
